Here’s how to make baking soda detergent to make your whole house shine

Natural, economical and biodegradable, baking soda is a multi-use product, useful for cleaning your home, but also your laundry. Making your own detergent allows you to save money, but also to maintain your home without harming the environment or your health. Find out how to make your own homemade detergent with baking soda.

Degreaser, descaler, disinfectant and deodorizer, baking soda has several strings to its bow. This multi-use product is one of the essentials in the house. Moreover, it is used in the preparation of several homemade detergents.

How to make homemade detergent with baking soda?

  • Laundry Detergent

To make an ecological, but also economical laundry detergent you will need:

  • 50 g of Marseille soap shavings
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice

Dissolve the Marseille soap shavings in a liter of boiling water, and add the baking soda and drops of essential oil. Wait for your mixture to cool and pour it into a bottle, using a funnel. Your laundry is now ready. Shake your bottle before each use, and be careful not to overdose your detergent. You may thus end up  with a large quantity of foam, which is difficult to rinse.

In addition to cleaning your clothes, baking soda  will whiten your laundry , remove stubborn stains and bad odors from your clothes.

  • Dishwashing liquid

You will need

  • A bar of soap
  • ½ cup liquid soap
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice (optional)

First, grate the bar of soap into shavings. Then, in a saucepan over low heat, add the water and soap shavings. Stir the mixture until the soap dissolves completely. Then add the liquid soap and baking soda, continuing to stir to thoroughly incorporate all the ingredients. Then remove the pan from the heat and let your preparation cool. Then add the drops of essential oil.

Store your liquid soap in a bottle. If the consistency is very thick to your liking, you can add a little water. Shake the bottle before each use.

  • Dishwasher tablets

You will need

  • 2 tablespoons of soda crystals
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • 20 drops of an essential oil of your choice
  • ½ cup coarse salt (optional)
  • A little water

Mix the baking soda, soda crystals, citric acid and coarse salt in a bowl, and using a sprayer, moisten your mixture with a little water, while stirring. Continue adding water until you obtain a compact powdery texture.  Then, fill the compartments of your ice cube tray with this mixture and pack it well to have compact tablets. Let it sit for 24 hours in the fridge and then turn the ice cube tray over  to loosen your tablets.

Baking soda will allow you to clean, degrease and neutralize bad odors that may escape from your dishwasher. Soda crystals and citric acid are also effective in cleaning and disinfecting your dishes. As for salt,  it will allow you to remove limescale from your dishwasher in order to avoid scale deposits on lids and glasses.

  • Bathroom detergent

To scrub, degrease and clean the bathtub, sinks and shower, you will need

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup soda crystals
  • 2 tablespoons of Meudon white
  • ½ glass of liquid black soap
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • A little water

In a container, mix the baking soda, soda crystals, Meudon white and drops of essential oil. Gradually add water while continuing to stir to obtain a homogeneous paste. You will thus obtain a scouring paste.  Apply it to the surfaces you want to remove dirt, and rub with a sponge.

  • Multi-purpose detergent

To make a detergent useful for cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces in your home, you will need

  • 1 liter of water
  • 2 tablespoons of black soap
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice (optional)

In a container, mix the black soap, baking soda and essential oil, and add water to dilute everything. Pour your preparation into a spray and spray the surfaces you want to clean with this homemade detergent.
