Put the egg in an ice tray: a trick to try

  • by

Did you know that eggs can be frozen? Pop them in an ice cube tray to freeze, then take them out when you need them!

Not everyone knows that you can freeze eggs, but some raw and prepared eggs can be frozen using these instructions. However, eggs cannot be frozen in their shells.•

Whole eggs – beat until just combined, then transfer to freezer containers and seal tightly. Before freezing, label the eggs with the number and date. •

Egg whites – Separate the eggs one by one, making sure there are no yolks in the whites. Pour into freezer containers, close tightly and label. If you want the egg whites to thaw faster, place them in an ice cube tray and freeze before transferring the egg cubes to a freezer container.•

Egg Yolks – Egg yolks thicken and gel when frozen, so they need special preparation before freezing. To slow thickening, mix 1/2 cup salt or 1½ teaspoons sugar or corn syrup per ¼ cup egg yolks (about 4 egg yolks). Include the number of yolks, the date, and whether they are salty (for savory dishes) or sugary (for baked or sweet products).•

Boiled Eggs – You can freeze hard-boiled egg yolks to use later for toppings and side dishes.

Place the egg yolks in a single layer in a saucepan and add enough water so that the yolks are at least 1 inch deep.

Cover and bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let sit in water for about 15 minutes.

Remove the yolks with a slotted spoon, drain and package to freeze.

Do not freeze whole hard-boiled eggs and egg whites as they become hard and watery when frozen.

Some people have more fresh eggs than they need. You can freeze them before the expiration date to avoid food waste
