How to remove a key broken in the lock: 5 tricks to avoid disassembling everything

  • by

Minor accidents can happen anywhere and every day. Sometimes due to poor maintenance, manufacturing defects or too much haste. One of the most common accidents is  keys breaking and getting stuck in the lock  .

The worst thing about this problem is that when it happens with the house keys, the solution cannot be postponed. Before you call a locksmith, you can try these tricks to  remove a broken key in the lock without having to disassemble everything  .

First trick

All you need is a very strong magnet. If the key is stuck in the vertical position, it is very easy to remove it.

Put some lubricant on it, then take the magnet and place it on the key to let it work. The key should stick to the magnet and release easily.

Second trick

You will need needle nose pliers or scissors with very thin tips. Lubricate the area around the key, then use pliers or scissors to grab the end of the key that is sticking out of the lock.

Try to carefully remove the key. Do this movement little by little without pulling forcefully: you risk inserting the key deeper into the lock.

If the key broke in the lock but the door remained open, you can try one of the following tricks  .

First trick

If the key is stuck with the door open, look for keys with a very thin tip and, from the opposite side (i.e. inside the house), insert one of the tips of the scissors until it comes into contact with the key.

Push inward so the key comes out completely. If you can’t get it all out, you can use pliers to pull it out completely.

Second trick

The trick is similar to the previous one, but instead of scissors we use a different key.

By inserting it into the interior lock, the stuck key is pushed outwards.

Third trick

It was all the rage on social media precisely because it was so effective. The key must be vertical. Heat a piece of silicone with a lighter until it melts. Immediately place the loose silicone on the lock where the key is.

Press firmly for a minute until the silicone has cooled. Then pull back the silicone so the key comes out. Do not pull too hard to avoid tearing the silicone.
